Collecting like terms

  • Expand brackets first!
  1. TERMS are separated by + or –
  2. “LIKE” terms must have exactly the same LETTER bit (the NUMBER bit can be different)
  3. Add the COEFFICIENTS of like terms

Exam Tip

A “Coefficient” answers the question “how many?”

For example:

the coefficient of x in 2x2 – 5x + 2 is -5

and:

the coefficient of x in ax2 + bx + c is b
